The Gravy Train Selection

Justin Dwyer

Guitar

With a career as a session guitarist spanning multiple decades and playing across Europe, Justin has worked with numerous bands performing at nationally renowned venues, such as The Jazz Cafe, Rock Garden, The 100 Club, Ronnie Scott’s, The Square Harlow, Cambridge Junction, Soul Cellar Southampton, The London Jazz Festival, National Jazz in Education Festival, Royal Northern College of Music and O2 Academies in Islington, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol. Playing mostly in a jazz style and learning his ferocious funk chops, Justin has more recently toured as the guitarist with Gavin Harrison & 05Ric, having completed 3 successful tours of the UK and Europe. Justin is a founding member, guitarist and composer of funky tunes and melodies for The Gravy Train.

Hugh Birkenhead

Organ

Hugh has been playing professionally his entire adult life and works with a number of global acts as session keys; being renowned for his funk and soul chordal expression. He's played with rare-funk bands such as Groove Cartell and can be found cruising through the rhythm section of Uncle Funk and the Boogie Wonderband. His playing has taken him across Europe and through many different styles of music - and that breadth of genres really shines through in his playing - with a signature dual organ style, he is comfortable thrashing out a solid bassline with the left hand, while simultaneously tearing out lyrical solos with the right. A true sight to behold.

Ian Griffith

Drums

Ian has been playing drums since the age of 7 & has been a professional since 2005, performing and recording worldwide. After an early interest in Rock and Dance music, he gravitated towards Funk and Soul as his playing matured. Some career highlights include supporting The Average White Band, Anastasia and The Fun Lovin' Criminals, with recording highlights including Studio 2 Abbey Road, The Lodge (The Enid) and 2 Seas Records (Royal Palace, Bahrain). When he's not touring, Ian enjoys playing with a host of local artists in and around his home town of Cambridge, and is the go-to guy for visiting songwriters wanting to establish a foothold on the local scene. His favourite and most inspirational drummers are John Bonham, Bernard Purdie, Derrick Makenzie and Stanton Moore.
